This South Fremantle home sets a new standard for urban development, showcasing an inspiring approach to infill while preserving tree canopy.

The subject site is located on the corner of Douro Road and Walker Street in South Fremantle. The proposed works include:

  • A two-bedroom, two-bathroom single house; and
  • A one-bedroom, one-bathroom ancillary dwelling with a separate living area, linked to the proposed single house by a shared laundry; and
  • An underground basement.

One key aspect of the project is the proposed setback of the building. By reducing the setback, the design aims to accommodate the retention of a mature and significant tree that has been recognised by the Council as deserving preservation. The reduced setback also allows space to incorporate views of the existing heritage dwelling.

The result sees clever architecture making the tree the heart of the home, see below:

Of particular significance is the fact that the heart of the home has been specifically designed around the presence of an already mature tree on the site.
